Medallion Shadow Box (#3)

This shadow box is intended to hold two ~80mm medallions, such as from a marathon. It was built and given as a gift to some people who supported my father in law during his woodworking business for many years and still visit occasionally. I built this out of mahogany for the sides and a 1/4" plywood back covered with some black felt for the visible surface. The back is set into the sides with a 3/8" x 1/4" rabbet to hold the back with the extra felt thickness, and then the whole thing is glued together. I also added some splines to the corner miters for strength and looks. The back has a long slot at the top with a 3D-printed insert to allow the ribbon from the medallions to go through (the felt is cut as well) and be clipped on the back using four coffee clips that I attached. The wood is finished with a few coats of linseed oil mixed with mineral spirits, and then some paste wax, to bring out the natural beauty of the mahogany and protect it.
