A.H. Okuda Woodworking

Lanai Door (#0)

This is a door for my home's lanai (patio). I built it as the first wood project that I have done for a while, at least since I was a teenager and worked with my grandfather to build stuff from wood and do wood carvings. It is built from redwood lumber that I milled from rough boards. The frame is 1.5"x3.5" (aka: 2x4) and uses mortise and tenon glued construction. The cross bars are 1" wide and I added half-laps on each side to inset the bars into the frame a bit. The bars on either side are placed in an offset fashion, which allows for privacy while maintaining airflow. It is finished in a single coat of a commercial 3-oil outdoor protectant (Cabot Australian Timber Oil) with only a light tint ("Honey Teak") for UV protection. I utilized an inexpensive closet style doorknob since this is not meant to be a security barrier and mounted to the concrete block post using enough concrete screws to hold up a small car.
